Tools and resources for high school educators implementing work-based learning curricula and programming to prepare students for careers in healthcare

Implementing Healthcare Work-Based Learning

Healthcare employers are excited about the future of community health and about new ways of caring for their patients, and are looking forward to the energy, ideas, and passion of young adults as they join the workplace.

Implementing a work-based learning model that is validated by industry is a way you can give your students a running head start in navigating their professional futures while communicating to healthcare employers that you are serious about collaboration.

Healthcare makes up about 20% of the New York City economy and employs hundreds of thousands of workers. With its scale and diversity of jobs, healthcare presents an excellent opportunity for young adults to find a meaningful and impactful career that suits their interests and strengths.

The NYACH Ready for Healthcare work-based learning model and this supporting toolkit were created with exactly this focus in mind. The four-year model was explicitly designed for both employers and educators—structuring learning activities to be relevant to the skills employers need, ensuring they are developmentally appropriate for students, and creating easily modifiable industry-validated tools to support the full range of work-based learning activities.

If you are an educator or school administrator exploring the possibility of instituting a full four-year work-based learning model at your school, please feel free to contact NYACH to learn more.

The Toolkit contains content that will help you plan, execute, and evaluate a guest speaker event, including materials to use with and guide your students.

Professional Skills Internships

In the NYACH Ready for Healthcare work-based learning model, professional skills internships typically take place in 11th grade. Unlike clinical internships—which focus on technical skills associated with specific healthcare careers—professional skills internships help students learn what it’s like to actually work in a healthcare setting. Through a professional skills internship, students practice what they’ve learned in school and get hands-on experience with professional norms and expectations. This is a great way for employers to mentor and prepare learners for future employment and success, and for students to learn “what it’s really like” in the workplace.

In addition to general guides, this section includes resources to guide your check-ins with both students and employers, as well as assessment tools and skills checklists that employers will use to assess students.

Technical Skills Internships

In the NYACH Ready for Healthcare work-based learning model, technical (or clinical) skills internships typically take place in the fourth year, or 12th grade. Through a technical skills internship, students practice patient care skills they’ve learned in the classroom directly with patients under the supervision of a qualified health professional. This is a great way for employers to help students excel and become fully productive members of a care team and for students to get hands-on experience working directly in patient care.

Although many of the included materials are adaptable to different occupational paths, this segment of the toolkit is tailored to technical skills internship in the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Medical Assistant (MA) learning paths.

To see all materials related to technical skills internships, please refer to the Technical Skills Internship Activity Guide.
